Everyday Prepping 101: Your First Steps to Emergency Preparedness
Posted on September 17 2024,
Have you ever thought about what you would do if the unexpected happened?
Maybe a prolonged power outage, a severe storm or something else. We're seeing it happen more and more often and it can feel overwhelming. The way around it, is through it and by preparing yourself and taking steps toward preparation is easier than you think.
Let’s walk through it together, step by step.
Why Urban Prepping Matters
Living in a city or suburbia has its perks: convenience, culture and plenty of coffee shops. But urban life also means relying heavily on systems that can sometimes break down. We experienced this during Covid Prepping is about being ready for the unexpected, so you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe and comfortable.
Think of urban prepping as creating a safety net. It’s not about fear—it’s about empowerment. It’s “I’ve got this” when things don’t go as planned.
Step 1: Start Small with Essentials
When you’re just getting started, it’s easy to feel like you need to do everything all at once. But remember, even a small step forward is progress.
We'll lay out a few of the basics to get started with. You can also visit the Shadow Prepper SHOP for our recommended products broken down by category:
In an emergency, clean drinking water is one of the most important things you’ll need and one of the first things to sell out at all the stores.
Start by storing at least one gallon of water per person per day for three days. That’s your minimum goal.
- Pro Tip: Invest in a water filtration system. You can start with a water straw or a bottle...but get started now! These are compact and easy to store while also being handy for sheltering in place or filtering water on the go. Check out our recommended options HERE.
Having non-perishable food on hand is another "First Step" to take in prepping for the unexpected. Think canned goods, jerky, dried fruits, nuts and emergency food packs. Aim for a three-day supply to start.
- Pro Tip: Emergency food bundles are a great option for beginners. They’re lightweight, nutritious, easy to store and takes the stress out of deciding where to start. Find beginner-friendly kits here.
This is a major area for city-dwelling preppers. Accidents happen and a good first aid kit can help you treat minor injuries until professional help is available. We've dedicated an entire category to this prepping topic.

Step 2: Plan for Your Space
Urban prepping often means working with limited space. Not everyone has access to a basement, bunker or even a spare closet or garage. In fact, living in a house or apartment, we typically need every inch of our living space. But don’t let that stop you! Here are a few tips:
- Go vertical: Use shelves and stackable containers to maximize storage
- Choose multi-purpose items: For example, a flashlight-radio combo like THIS ONE or blankets that double as rain ponchos
- Dedicate one closet: Find an inexpensive closet/wardrobe at a thrift store and keep it just for your supplies. You can even keep it outdoors under cover
Step 3: Make a Grab-and-Go Bag
Emergencies often move fast and unexpectedly. A grab-and-go bag (or bug-out bag) is a backpack with essentials you can take with you at a moments notice. Here’s what to include:
- Water and snacks
- First aid supplies
- A flashlight and extra batteries
- Copies of important documents
- A change of clothes
- Personal hygiene items
-
- Pro Tip: Sometimes it's easier to buy a completed bag instead of building one. Then you can add or subtract to your personal needs. We've collected a wide variety of our favorites so you can decide what's best for you. Nearly all of our Bug Out Bags include the items listed above. Find the perfect starter bag here.
Step 4: Learn and Connect
Prepping isn’t only about supplies, it’s also about knowledge and community. Take time to learn skills like:
- Basic first aid
- How to shut off your home’s utilities
- Cooking without electricity
Be sure to connect with your neighbors. Building a support network can make a big difference during a tough time.
Step 5: Stay Positive
Prepping isn’t about doom and gloom—it’s about hope and resilience. Every step you take today gives you greater control when the unexpected happens.
